The Consul was given workshop pilot productions in 2010 and 2011, this was the first piece that the company devised together. Each re-working built on the last.
On the first occasion it took place by torchlight in a derelict warehouse in Curtain Road in Shoreditch. There was no electricity and the performance too place as the audience moved from room to dilapidated room for each of the six or so scenes. Notwithstanding, it had a wonderful design by Nadia Lakhani, longtime collaborator with The Wedding Collective, including a pool in the last of the six locations around the building. The cast of singers was small and we gave only three performances to invited guests.
The second occasion was in Limehouse Town Hall. The audience moved less from room to room but within the very large central hall they changed their focus to a number of different ‘aspects’ of the room.
On both occasions there was a small ‘band’.
